In the same way the Spirit also comes to help us, weak as we are. For we do not know how we ought to pray; the Spirit himself pleads with God for us in groans that words cannot express.

Romans 8:26

After Elijah rebuilt the Lord’s altar and placed the bull on it at the time of sacrifice, he prayed a simple prayer. His motive was clear, “So these people will know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again. Then the fire of the Lord fell . . . . When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, ‘The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!'” (1 Kings 18:37-39)

It was the right prayer in the right way at the right time for the right reason. The Altar Project has been God’s call in our time, and the reason is the same—that our children will know that the Lord is God, and that He is turning their hearts back again.

For the past 31 days, you have come to the altar and presented your prayers to God. It did not matter whether your prayers were child-like, eloquent, muffled sobs, or silent thoughts. The Holy Spirit interpreted them all, and He stands ready to continue aiming your prayers like arrows at the bull’s eye of God’s will. Don’t let this be the end of altering your altar. If the fire of new passion for God and His Word has fallen, then by all means, let it burn!

Please Pray . . .

  1. That our children will know that the Lord is God and that He is turning their hearts back again.
  2. That we won’t allow the fire of God to be snuffed out.
  3. That the Altar Project and the Family Worship Challenge will continue as a way of life throughout the Washington Conference and beyond.
  4. That the Holy Spirit will pray for us with groans that words cannot express and that revival will come at last to God’s people.
