Ancient Words
By Doug Bing, Washington Conference president
Have your kids ever kept singing a song so much that it gets stuck in your head? I remember when my children were younger, they would pester me at times by singing songs that they knew would get stuck in my head!
While attending church last week, the praise team sang a song written by Michael W. Smith titled “Ancient Words.” This song has been stuck in my head since then, but this isn’t a song that you wish you could stop singing in your head! Instead I have been happily humming it all week long.
One phrase of the song in particular catches my attention:
Holy words of our Faith
handed down to this age.
Came to us through sacrifice
O heed the faithful words of Christ.
The words of this particular phrase in the song reminds me of the most ancient of words that prophesied of Jesus’ sacrifice. Genesis 3:15 says,
And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head and you will strike his heel.
I am always moved by these ancient words that God spoke to the human race right after sin began on earth. God had a plan that involved sacrifice and most of all those ancient words has given us the hope of an end to sin and suffering.
The ancient words brought to us through Jesus’ sacrifice are still being handed down to us today. Another phrase of the song tells us what will happen when we embrace and believe in Jesus.
Ancient words ever true
Changing me, and changing you.
We have come with open hearts
Oh let the ancient words impart.
I pray that all of us will continue to let the ancient, but very relevant, words of Jesus change us as we open our hearts to hear and follow his voice.
